Monte Carlo

A principality, not a French town

Monte Carlo is not in France: it is one district of the Principality of Monaco, an independent state of about two square kilometres, surrounded by French territory. There is no visible border control and the currency is the euro, so most visitors cross without noticing. Casino Square, with the Belle Époque Casino de Monte-Carlo, is what made the district famous. Entering the casino requires you to be 18 and carry a passport, and the private rooms expect smart dress; the square, the grand buildings around it and the gardens outside are open to everyone.

What to see in a day

Monaco is small enough to cover on foot. From Monte Carlo you walk down to Port Hercule, lined with yachts, and up to Monaco-Ville, the Rock where the Prince's Palace stands, with its changing of the guard. Close by is the Oceanographic Museum, built into the cliff above the sea. In late May the city changes pace for the Formula 1 Grand Prix: the circuit is made of ordinary city streets, and hotels and restaurants fill up early.

Getting there

Monaco has no airport. The simplest route is to fly to Nice and take the train, which reaches Monaco-Monte Carlo station in around 20 minutes. Many visitors make it a day trip, because places to stay inside the principality are limited, and Nice or Menton are often the more practical base.
