Ibiza
Ibiza is more than clubs: UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila, clear-water coves in the north and ferries to Formentera, depending on where you base yourself.
Two islands in one
Ibiza has a reputation for clubs, and the reputation is earned: the big venues in Ibiza Town and Playa d'en Bossa and the sunset bars of Sant Antoni run from late spring until early autumn. But the island has a second side, in the north and the countryside: whitewashed farmhouses, pine-fringed coves and the hippy markets that began in the 1960s. You can have either, or both, depending on where you base yourself.
Dalt Vila, the coves and Formentera
Dalt Vila, the walled upper town of Ibiza Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage site; climb its cobbled lanes to the cathedral and the ramparts for the view over the harbour. The best beaches are coves: Cala Comte for sunset, Cala Salada and Benirràs in the north-west (drummers gather at Benirràs for the sunset) and Ses Salines for long white sand in the south. Ferries leave the port for Formentera, the smaller, flatter island with some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Las Dalias, in Sant Carles, is the best-known hippy market.
Practicalities
The airport is about 7 km from town, and in summer the island is very busy: hire a car or book transfers early, because buses are limited. Ferries also sail from Barcelona, Valencia and Dénia. Reach the popular coves early in the morning or late in the afternoon; by midday in July and August the car parks fill up, and Dalt Vila is best seen in the evening, when the walls are lit and the heat has gone. Many venues close outside the season, so winter is quiet. From Tirana, connections tend to be seasonal and often involve a change. The common mistake is choosing a hotel for its pool and ignoring its location: Playa d'en Bossa is loud at night, Sant Antoni busy, Santa Eulària calm and family-friendly, the north very quiet. Is Ibiza only for partying?
No. The clubs are the best-known part, but the north and the countryside have quiet coves, hippy markets and whitewashed villages. The area you pick decides what kind of holiday you get.
Which area is best for families?
Santa Eulària and the northern areas are calmer and better suited to families. Playa d'en Bossa and Sant Antoni are livelier and louder at night.
When are the clubs and venues open?
Usually from late spring to early autumn. Outside the season many venues close and the island is very quiet.
Can I visit Formentera?
Yes, by ferry from Ibiza port. Formentera is smaller and flatter, with very clear water, and is often visited as a day out.
